Yom Haatzmaut
Hoy es festivo en Israel: se celebra el Día de la Independencia, Yom Haatzmaut, que se diría en el idioma bíblico.
¿Quién podría describir mejor que un israelí este día?
Independence Day starts tonight in Israel.
And before you think that Israelis actually believe that we were victorious over aliens in a battle for the Earth's survival, Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzmaut in Hebrew) is the day we celebrate the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948. Actually, the English date was May 16th, 1948. But here in Israel, we celebrate our holidays according to the Hebrew calendar.
Independence Day falls immediately after Memorial Day, meaning that we celebrate the establishment of the State right after we commemorate those who died fighting for it.
On Independence Day, there are all sorts of parties and parades in Israel (as well as celebrations in Jewish communities around the world). Israeli flags adorn homes, cars and street poles. Small children run around with balloons or plastic hammers, their faces painted white blue and white. As an ex-pat Australian, one of my favorite aspects of Independence Day is the BBQ - this year, we have been invited to four of them!

Aprovechando la muerte del líder de Hamás, Ahmed Yassin, el grupo terrorista amenazó
con tomar represalias. No tardó mucho en caer la primera víctima de la
violencia palestina. Una de las facciones terroristas afiliadas al
movimiento Fatah de Arafat baleó a un joven mientras trotaba en un
barrio de Jerusalén, cerca de la Universidad Hebrea. Luego de confesar
la autoría del crimen, tuvieron que disculparse públicamente porque
resultó que la víctima no era judía, sino un joven árabe, George
Khoury, hijo de un prominente abogado palestino de Jerusalén, que más
de una vez representó a la Autoridad Palestina ante las cortes
israelíes.
Hoy el Jerusalén Post ofrece algunas de la declaraciones del padre
sobre el hecho y sobre la situación de la sociedad palestina. Vale
mucho la pena leer el artículo. Acá va un párrafo que vale la pena
destacar.
Mi mensaje primero de todo a los líderes religiosos, el
liderazgo palestino, la sociedad palestina, y a todos los ilustrados
que aún valoran la vida humana en la sociedad palestina, es que se deben levantar todos, tomar coraje y decir, basta es basta.
Quizá haya un justo en Sodoma.
Pues eso.
